REUNION - The Indian Ocean, November 2011

From Mauritius to the French island of Reunion there was only a one night`s sail. We arrived in St. Pierre early one morning - after an interesting sail through the breakwaters. The island still has an active vulcano. The last blow out was in 2010. The biggest blow out in a long time happened in 2007 - and sent out lots of lava. Even in 2011 it was steaming from the 2007 lava when it was raining...

On top of a little peak - down in the crater Cirque de Cilaos. Reunion offers lots of beautiful nature.
Wine grapes, lentils and vanilla are cultivated in Reunion.
Marius` 1 year birthday was celebrated high up on Reunion.
We explored Reunion together with Lisbeth and Vegar from s/y Pomona and Lasse and Pauli from s/y Satumaa. Left pictur, from left: Vegar, Pauli, Lasse, Marius, Heidi, Eirik and Eivind.
Photo: Lisbeth.
Nice view down into the crater Cirque de Mafate.
"Interessting" roads in Reunion - some places it was so steep that the road did a360 degree turn, in under the bridge from where the picture is taken... "Old friends" with a good view over Circe de Mafate. We have met both Lisbeth and Vegar from Pomona and Lasse and Pauli from Satumaa many times - and we have become good friends! Eirik found the view exiting!
Vanilla - during the process of refining vanilla, it is stored in wooden boxes. Vanilla - from hand pollinating to refined product takes up to 3 years. Vanilla - Vegar with the refined product.
From the breakwater in St. Pierre we could see Humpback Whales. To the right Ulla and Mats, s/y Hokus Pokus. Pauli from Swedish s/y Satumaa is a doctor - and performed the 1 year check up on Marius - including the vaccines. As soon as Marius fell asleep, it was easier to work...
Easier to do the repair work in the pier than on Empire`s deck... One of Marius` and Eirik`s local fans.
"All" the sailors in St. Pierre were invited to "Empire-pizza". 15 pizzas were made. By a coincidence the day was also Harry on "Little Coconut"`s birthday. Note the sole towrd the fore cabin... Also the bunkbed was full of pizzas! Eirik is very happy every time he meets children he can play with!!!
Dipavali - Tamil light festival with theatre, street parade and a biiig firework.
Underway towards South Africa Eirik and Marius posted a bottle-mail each.
We are still waiting for a replay!
Eirik is always trying to keep order in his toys... Marius is working seriously to get over every child proofing we put up!!
Happy birthday, Heidi! Dolphins on the bow. The Captain explains to Marius what it`s all about..
s/y Empire - the young lady is still looking good, even after 6 1/2 years on the big oceans! s/y Pomona - shortly after departure from St. Pierre. Danish s/y Exabyte (IMX40) passed us a few hours after we departed St. Pierre.
Empire doing good speed just south of Madagascar, underway toward Richards
