RODRIGUES - Mauritius, September 2011

After nice days in the Australia atoll Cocos (Keeling) Islands we headed on, 2000 nm westward to the island of Rodrigues, a part of the country Mauritius. The voyage became more eventful than we wished for... When we arrived in Port Mathurin tha ship was again dry, but a lot still had to be rinsed of in fresh water. Rodrigues met us with fantastic people and interesting experiences.

Windy sail on a bumpy ocean - towards Rodrigues. Eirik always wants to help. Marius is discovering more of the world and more of himself everyday.
A breaking wave pushed Empire over on the side. The water on the leward side tore the dodger apart. Under the dodger the hatchn was open. A lot got wet when about 300-400 liters of water poured into the starboard aft cabin.
Luckily the permanent damages after the knock down was minimal - but a lot of things had to be dried out..
Empire`s chef is never of duty... We kept in touch with other sailors on their way to Rodrigues via the short wave radio. Empire back in "normal" running condition. Dry ship was celebrated with hoisting a new Norwegian Flag on a self made flag pole.
Mahimahi, Dolphin Fish, Dorado - many names for the same fish.
In Rodrigues we were welcomed to the big pier, where we were allowed to stay until the cargo ship arrived... Simple formalities and friendly officers always give a good first impression. James Waterstone in Rodrigues has met sailors arriving in the island for many years. His guest book is full of events!
We hadn`t seen fresh produce the last 4000nm..
The freshnes of the groceries in Rodrigues made the crew happy!
Just as kids on land, Eirik also has his three wheeler. Internett was made accessible outside the library in Port Mathurin. Kindergarten in s/y Empire!
Empire is easy to recognize, even from a long distance... Litle ass gets into the sink! Cress and Aton from Canadian s/y Conversations. First time we met were in Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
Around on the island...
The land tortoises was extinct in Rodrigues. Today the Rodriguans are trying to get a sustainable art by "importing" and by breeding the tortoises.
Eivind got time for a kite beginner course. When many sailors gathered in the restaurant overlooking Port Mathurin, we got to see local dancers in action. Norwegian s/y Pomona with Lisbeth and Vegar and Empire were allowed to stay tied up to the big pier even after the big ship had arrived...
